Some soap is poured smoothly into a mould and left to quietly become itself. Hot process soap takes a more hands-on approach.
It is cooked, watched, stirred and guided through its transformation in the soap pot. The finished bars may have textured tops, small variations and a rustic appearance, but these are not flaws waiting to be corrected. They are the visible marks of a traditional soapmaking method that values substance over cosmetic perfection.
At Terra Sapo, we could make soap differently. We choose not to.

What is hot process soap?
Hot process soap is traditional soap made by combining oils with a carefully measured alkaline solution and applying heat to complete the chemical reaction known as saponification.
During saponification, the oils and alkali react to create two things: soap and naturally occurring glycerin. The mixture is cooked before being placed into moulds, rather than being poured into the mould while the saponification process is still at an earlier stage.
The result is genuine soap made from oils, water and sodium hydroxide, not a synthetic cleansing bar designed to resemble it.
How is hot process soap made?
Every Terra Sapo batch begins with a considered recipe rather than a ready-made soap base.
We measure and prepare the oils for that particular bar, including ingredients such as olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, ethically sourced palm oil and shea butter. A precise sodium hydroxide solution is then prepared separately before being carefully combined with the oils.
This is where the soap pot earns its keep.
As the mixture is blended and heated, it begins to thicken. It moves through several distinct stages, changing from a liquid emulsion into a dense, glossy soap. The texture can rise, fold and settle as the heat drives the saponification process forward.
You cannot simply abandon the pot and hope for the best. We watch the temperature, observe the texture and work with what is happening in front of us. Every batch has its own rhythm, and experience teaches you when the soap needs attention and when it needs to be left alone.
Once the cook is complete, the finished soap is transferred into moulds. This mixture is much thicker than cold process soap batter, so it must be pressed and shaped rather than smoothly poured.
The bars are then unmoulded, cut and given time to harden and lose excess water. Although the soapmaking reaction has already been driven forward by heat, the resting period still matters. It helps produce a firmer, longer-lasting bar that is ready to take its place beside your sink, bath or shower.
Hot process vs cold process soap
Hot process and cold process soap begin with the same essential chemistry. Both methods combine oils with an alkaline solution to create genuine soap and naturally occurring glycerin. The principal difference is how saponification is managed.
With the cold process method, the soap mixture is usually poured into a mould while the chemical reaction is still progressing. It can remain fluid enough for smooth finishes, decorative swirls and intricate designs. The soap is then left to complete saponification and cure over several weeks.
With hot process soap, heat is used to drive the reaction forward in the soap pot before the mixture goes into the mould. By that point, the soap is thicker, less fluid and far less interested in behaving like cake batter for Instagram.
Neither process is universally better. A well-formulated bar can be made using either method, and the quality of the finished soap depends on much more than the technique alone. The recipe, measurements, ingredients, curing time and skill of the maker all matter.
Terra Sapo uses hot process because it gives us a direct, practical relationship with every batch. We can watch the soap develop, respond to its changing texture and see the transformation take place before it leaves the pot.
It is slower, more physical and occasionally rather stubborn. That is precisely why it suits us.
Why does hot process soap look different?
Hot process soap often has a textured, rustic appearance because it has already thickened during the cook before it is transferred into its mould. Rather than flowing into every corner and settling into a perfectly smooth block, the cooked soap must be spooned, pressed and shaped. This can create uneven tops, small air pockets, natural colour variations and subtle differences between one bar and the next. We do not try to disguise this.
A Terra Sapo bar is not supposed to look as though it has travelled along a factory conveyor belt with thousands of identical siblings. It is made in small batches, cut by hand and allowed to retain the character of the process that created it.
The texture tells you something. It tells you the soap was cooked. It tells you a maker handled it. It tells you that visual uniformity was not placed above the integrity of the method.
Your bar may not be identical to the one photographed on our website, but it will come from the same carefully considered formulation. That small difference is part of buying something genuinely handmade.
Does hot process soap contain glycerin?
Yes. Hot process soap naturally contains glycerin.
Glycerin is created during saponification when oils react with sodium hydroxide to become soap. It is not an ingredient we need to add afterwards. It is a natural part of the finished bar.
In traditional handmade soap, that glycerin remains within the formulation. Some large-scale manufacturing processes separate glycerin from soap so that it can be used in other products, but Terra Sapo does not remove it.
Glycerin is a humectant, which means it attracts water. Its presence contributes to the feel and character of a traditionally made bar, although no single ingredient can determine how suitable a soap will be for every person’s skin.
We prefer to be honest about that. Handmade soap is still a cleansing product, not a medical treatment or a promise of miraculous transformation. What we can offer is a thoughtfully formulated bar, made with care and without dressing ordinary soapmaking chemistry in a lab coat and calling it magic.

We could choose a method that creates smoother bars, makes decorative designs easier or produces a more uniform finish.
We choose hot process because it reflects what Terra Sapo is here to make: proper soap with a visible connection to its ingredients, its maker and its method.

There is something reassuringly honest about that.
We are not trying to make soap resemble confectionery, marble or a perfectly polished ornament. We want to make a dependable bar that lathers properly, cleans well and turns an ordinary daily wash into something considered.
Hot process soap asks more of the maker. It cannot be rushed into artificial perfection, and it does not hide the hand behind the product. Its rough edges, folds and variations are evidence of the work. That is not something we want to manufacture out of it.
